Cecil Rhodes

The world's history is filled with a goldmine of information that presents us with a rich  and solute story representing each and every culture. All of these stories, documents, pictures, letters, and other historical pieces of evidence hold a time specific to what was important during that time. For the man, Cecil Rhodes, people will find no letters, but scholars will make up for this lack of historical evidence by the documents and legacy that he has left behind for Africa and the rest of the world.

Cecil Rhodes was a business man who made his name in diamondsCecil Rhodes was born in July of 1853 to a father who was widely involved with the church, and his mother who was otherwise just known as your typical house wife during that time. Born with a lisp and a case of asthma, he found himself leaving grammar school by the time he was a teenager. It's said that his parents believed that his condition was only worsening in the London climates, and that he would fair better off someplace where the temperature wasn't so moist and thick. So, in result, they decided to send him to live in  Africa with his older brother, Herbert, who was tending to his cotton farm. With money that he received from his beloved Aunt, Cecil Rhodes took to Africa to help his brother with his cotton farm. Soon after, Rhodes began to enjoy the agricultural world and wanted to learn more about it. However, much to their dismay, the cotton field was a venture that wouldn't last long enough for either Rhodes brother to see the success of their work in the fields, as their cotton field was not bring them any money, and it suffered. Nothing was at a complete lost for Cecil Rhodes and his brother, as Cecil began to take an interest in diamonds and the mines that they were coming from.

It was in October of 1871 that Cecil, along with his brother, began to take the business approach to dedicating their lives to the diamond minds in Africa. It wasn't long before a business investment of financing was made by a company named N M Rothschild & Sons. It was this first business venture that allowed for the brothers to go forth and begin their hiring of workers, purchasing diamond mines. By 1889, he was able to seal his fate in the business of diamonds by involving Diamond Syndicate, a London based diamond corporation. It was because of this agreement that they made, his diamond business was able to own nearly 40% of the business that involved diamonds. It's reported that Cecil Rhodes and his company had owned 90% of business that were involved with diamonds and the mines they came from.  His company was called De Beers, which is still currently holding the market for owning nearly 40% of the world's business in handling diamonds. It's not stated how many mines this company started out with, but what is known, was that because Africa was rich with them, finding and owning them was something that Cecil Rhodes made a living doing, or rather that was one of his die hard passions.

His political views were something else of a different story. He strong heartedly believed imperialism, and being from Britain, he strongly wanted for British Imperialism. He didn't want this for just Africa, but he strongly believed that the rest of the world was meant to be under British rule. He felt that the rest of the world would be a much better place so long as the Anglo-Saxon race was in complete and dominant control. He also believed that the Anglo-Saxon race was destined for greatness. With this type of belief system in flowing through his own personal philosophical brain, he began to make his own personal path into making sure that this would happen. He started with founding one of the first international scholar ships for students to attend his newly built university. Cecil Rhodes claimed that he wanted to create a breed of philosophical beings that would be responsible for carrying out his imperialistic dreams aspirations. Over the years, he would allow other international students such as Germans, the Dutch, and other white countries with English as their main language.

The memorial for Cecil Rhodes in Zambia, AfricaWhile his school was beginning to take on it's own reputation, Cecil Rhodes wanted to check out other orgnizations that he felt might support his cause and desires. He would join the Freemasons, a group he later found to be not exactly what he expected them to be. He felt that their policies, rules, and and logic were not exactly aligned with his. What he also found to be ridiculous was that they didn't really support his notions of white supremacy either to be twas was going to take over the world. Among other societies that he wanted to create, it was discovered in his will that he wanted for those who were attending his college, those of Angl0-Saxon race to come together in his honor to begin completing the dream he never got the chance to complete, which is the spread of the Anglo-Saxon rule. However, looking at the world today, it's quite evident that this is a dream of his that never came true.

Looking through records, it's seen that Cecil Rhodes never married or had any children. Through reports, it states that he never had any time to begin his own family because he always had work on his mind. When he wasn't thinking about what work had to be done, he was physically doing it, in any attempts to expand his empire of diamond mines, and fulfill his dream of British Imperialism. Historians believe that looking through his relationships that he had, friendships, that he might have been homosexual. But there is not solid evidence of proof to say for sure whether this accusation is true or not.
